Hensies

The municipality of Hensies is composed of the villages of Hainin, Montroeul-sur-Haine, Thulin, and Hensies.

Bordered by the Hensies-Pommeroeul Canal and crossed by the Haine River, Hensies is a municipality where water and nature intertwine harmoniously. Its ponds, such as the one at Van Gheyt, and its numerous green spaces offer peaceful spots for relaxation and discovery.
Rich in religious heritage, the municipality also highlights its history, as evidenced by the restored organs of the Saint-Georges and Saint-Martin churches, now open to the public.

Hensies is a true cultural crossroads, welcoming 21 nationalities thanks to its industrial past linked to coal mining. This melting pot is reflected in unique initiatives, such as the community garden, which brings together varieties of fruits and vegetables from around the world, or the "19th Century Festival", celebrated every second weekend in August. Local crafts, including farm products, passionate florists, and homemade charcuterie, complete the picture of a dynamic and authentic municipality.

The Moeschal Signal Monument

Along the Brussels-Paris highway in Hensies, two imposing pylons topped with stylized hands catch the eye.

Erected in 1972 by sculptor Jacques Moeschal, this 57-meter artwork embodies Franco-Belgian friendship, symbolizing the meeting between the two countries. Located at the former border post, it stands as a reminder of a time when national boundaries were visible, while carrying a universal message of reconciliation.
Moeschal, a master of monumental sculpture, aimed to mark major roads with meaningful works, and this monument remains a powerful artistic and memorial landmark.

Multicultural Vegetable Garden : A Garden of Cultures and Encounters

In Hensies, a vegetable garden brings residents together around their roots and a common project.

Created in 2012 near a community school, the multicultural vegetable garden in Hensies is much more than a place for vegetable cultivation. A true symbol of integration, it brings together the 26 nationalities of the municipality. Each plot reflects an origin: Algeria, Turkey, Italy, Russia, or even Equatorial Africa. Everyone comes together with one goal: to cultivate the land and human bonds.

Led by Renata Gemma and the non-profit "Femmes Immigrées et Culture", this project fosters intergenerational and intercultural encounters. Children discover diversity through vegetables, while the elderly share their knowledge. Every year, the harvest festival celebrates these crops and the bonds formed among the residents. A beautiful example of solidarity and sharing.

"The 19th Century Festival" in Montroeul-sur-Haine

A festive immersion in the past, at the heart of a historic brewery.

Every year, the weekend before August 15, Montroeul-sur-Haine celebrates "The 19th Century Festival", an event that attracts around 4,000 visitors in a warm and friendly atmosphere.
Nestled in the former farm-brewery "La Noyelle", this village festival brings past traditions to life with authenticity. From morning walks in the countryside to performances, artisans, theater, and quirky activities like a pig race, both young and old find joy. Orchestras, vintage carousels, and the famous beer "La Grande Noyelle", brewed specially for the occasion, add to the timeless charm of this festival.
