Jurbise

Situated between Mons and Ath, Jurbise is a rural area composed of the villages of Erbaut, Erbisoeul, Herchies, Jurbise, Masnuy-Saint-Jean, and Masnuy-Saint-Pierre.

Along the marked trails, visitors can discover beautifully maintained chapels and farms. Architectural heritage is one of Jurbise's strong points, especially with the many castles located in the area, such as the Château des Viviers. The municipality also boasts some curiosities, such as the Locquet Fountain in Herchies, where water gushes from a carved blue stone, a work by Jean Bersoux, a stone mason from Soignies. The most surprising feature, however, is the Clou Tree in Herchies, listed by the Walloon Region since 1985.
Sports enthusiasts can enjoy numerous walking trails across the municipality or practice golf at the Royal Golf Club du Hainaut. Through its folklore and events, such as the Jurbise, Herchies, and Erbisoeul Ducasses, the Saint-Barthélemy procession, or the beer festival, everyone can experience the friendly atmosphere that gives this area its reputation.

Good to know : The famous poet and novelist Pierre CORAN hails from Jurbise. After 50 years in publishing and over 130 books, this award-winning author still takes great pleasure in writing and being read.

Château d’Egmont: A Medieval Treasure for Your Events

Nestled in Herchies (Jurbise), the Château d’Egmont, dating from the 11th century, has hosted prestigious families such as the Counts of Egmont and Gavre. Today revitalized by private owners, this historic venue hosts weddings, parties, seminars, and other events, combining medieval charm with modern comfort.

Steeped in history, this castle could have disappeared at the end of the 19th century if it hadn't been for the intervention of Canon Edmond Puissant. Passionate about heritage, he undertook meticulous restoration, saving the 15th-century keep and the provost's residence. Today, this architectural gem is surrounded by a 3-hectare park, blending historical ruins with contemporary landscaping.
The site comes alive with the "Hérésies d’Egmont," festive evenings held from May to September, and offers an ideal setting for private or professional events. To extend the experience, a cozy loft nestled in this unique setting is available.
Celebrate your special moments in this historically rich place, where every stone tells a story, and enjoy unforgettable moments in an exceptional environment.

The Clou Tree of Herchies: Mystery and Ancient Beliefs

Perched at the edge of the fields in Herchies (Jurbise), the Clou Tree intrigues and fascinates. Steeped in popular beliefs, this testament to an ancient tradition continues to attract curious visitors and dreamers seeking serenity and mystery.

At the heart of popular beliefs, the Clou Tree of Herchies perpetuates an old tradition: that of healing trees. According to custom, driving a nail into its bark with a cloth rubbed on a sick area would transfer the ailments to the tree. With thousands of nails planted up to several meters high, this oak tree embodies a spirituality rooted in nature.
Classified as heritage by the Walloon Region in 1985, the current tree was replanted in 1954 after the death of its predecessor. Despite the years, the magic of the place persists, carried by prayers, candles, and flowers placed at its feet. A peaceful, silent, and mysterious place where everyone finds a unique connection with nature.
To discover : Rue des Chats, Herchies. Respect the tree, a guardian of precious intangible heritage.
