The Tour Valenciennoise: A beautifully restored witness of the past

After the disappearance of the medieval ramparts, the six gates dating back to the 13th century, and the stone and brick towers from the 14th century, one impressive vestige remains: the "Tour Valenciennoise", erected on Rue des Arbalestriers.

Inaugurated in 1359, this monumental tower is distinguished by the solidity of its walls, four meters thick, a true fortress that withstood the ravages of time and demolition. As my grandfather used to say, "In those days, they built to last!" Today, two levels of the tower were carefully restored in 2009, offering a striking glimpse of its former architecture. Originally, the tower had an additional floor, and its roof was crowned with a characteristic shape resembling a pepperpot.

The restoration project, which revived the tower, perfectly combines history and modernity. A recently added metal walkway now provides exterior access and blends elegantly with the medieval architecture.

A must-see place for lovers of heritage and history, where the past and present meet in harmony.
