The Grand Place of Audregnies: The Largest Green Square in Belgium

A Unique Space Between Nature and Memory

As the largest green square in Belgium, the Grand Place of Audregnies stretches over 2 hectares, offering a remarkable haven of greenery. However, this space was not always the iconic site it is today.
Once the garden of the Trinitarian convent, founded in the 13th century, the square formerly served as a vegetable garden, pasture, and refuge for the less fortunate. The Trinitarians, pioneers of humanitarian aid, raised funds here to ransom Christian slaves captured in the Mediterranean. Although few traces remain, such as a door dating back to 1763 adorned with symbols of the order, the square retains an atmosphere steeped in history.
Each year, this heritage comes to life during the Saint-Jean festivities, where light and sound pay tribute to its fascinating past.

The Battle of Audregnies: A Moving Memorial Site to Discover

A Heroic Act in the Borinage Countryside

On August 24, 1914, the fields of Audregnies became the scene of a heroic battle. Their sacrifice helped pave the way for the Allied counteroffensive at the Marne, a decisive turning point in World War I.

Today, a poignant memorial stands on this historic battlefield. Let yourself be immersed in the solemn and respectful atmosphere, where every detail tells the story of courage and tragedy. Extend your visit to the Commonwealth cemetery, the final resting place of 41 heroes, and explore the informative panels that recount the key moments of this confrontation.
