The Castle of Boussu is a fascinating archaeological site that bears witness to human activity dating back to the Gallo-Roman period. The estate includes the ruins of a castle measuring about one hundred meters on each side, stables capable of housing nearly 300 horses, and a gateway, all set within a natural park of 12 hectares.

Classified as "exceptional heritage of Wallonia," the site and its entrance gatehouse hold great historical value.

The Castle: A Masterpiece of the Renaissance

Built under the direction of architect-sculptor Jacques Du Broeucq at the request of Jean de Hennin-Liétard, the first Count of Boussu and Grand Squire to Emperor Charles V, the castle is one of the first masterpieces of Renaissance architecture north of the Loire. Although it suffered from the numerous conflicts of the 16th and 17th centuries, it was restored several times before ultimately being abandoned.

The Gatehouse and its Triumph Arch

The entrance gatehouse, carefully restored, is now open to the public. This building provides the opportunity to discover many remnants from the different periods of the site's occupation, such as engravings and sculptures by Jacques Du Broeucq, as well as objects from the Gallo-Roman era and the German occupation during World War II. This renovated and partially reconstructed site, following the original plans, allows visitors to immerse themselves in the rich and diverse history of the Castle of Boussu.
